A home EV charger is a dedicated, weatherproof unit wired directly to your consumer unit on its own protected circuit. It charges roughly three times faster than the three-pin lead supplied with most cars, and — crucially — it can be scheduled to run during cheap overnight electricity windows.

Nearly all UK houses are on a single-phase electricity supply, which caps a home charge point at around 7kW. That is not a limitation in practice — a 7kW unit will replenish a typical EV overnight while you sleep.

All new domestic chargers sold in the UK have smart functionality. In practice that means scheduling, app control, load balancing and — on some units — the ability to charge from surplus solar generation.

If you have panels, look at chargers with genuine solar surplus modes. If you do not, focus on tariff integration instead: shifting charging into an off-peak window is where most households find their savings.

1. Assessment

We check your main fuse rating, earthing arrangement, consumer unit and where the car parks.

2. Charger position

We agree exactly where the unit goes, checking cable reach, weather exposure and appearance.

3. Installing the circuit

A dedicated circuit is run with correctly sized cable and neat containment, and penetrations are sealed.

4. Testing and certification

The circuit is tested, the charger commissioned, and the appropriate certification issued.

5. Handover

We set up the app with you and show you how scheduled charging works before we leave.

An EV charger is a continuous high-current load running for hours at a time, often outdoors, in all weather, for years. Cable sizing, protective devices, earthing arrangements and load management are not optional details — they are what keeps the installation safe.

A properly installed charge point is tested, certificated and notified where required. That matters for your safety, your insurance and the manufacturer's warranty on the unit.
