On period properties, a compact untethered unit in a discreet colour often looks better than a large tethered charger with a coiled cable on show.

If you have already bought a unit, that is fine — we can install a customer-supplied charger as long as it is a compliant Type 2 product with the correct protection.

Almost all UK houses have a single-phase electricity supply, and that limits a home charge point to around 7kW. That is not a compromise — it is simply the practical ceiling for a domestic property, and it is plenty for overnight charging.

A 7kW unit charges roughly three times faster than a standard three-pin lead and will typically take a car from low to full across a night. Faster 22kW charging needs a three-phase supply, which very few homes have.

Older properties can have earlier consumer units or supplies that have been extended over time. We check condition and capacity rather than assuming, and explain clearly if anything needs upgrading before a charger goes in.

1. Assessment

We check your incoming supply, main fuse rating, earthing arrangement and consumer unit, and look at where the car parks. This is what determines whether the job is simple or needs extra work.

2. Agreeing the position

We agree exactly where the charger will go, checking cable reach to the car's charging port, weather exposure and how you will use it day to day.

3. Cable route and installation

A dedicated circuit is run from the consumer unit to the charger using appropriately sized cable and containment, with penetrations sealed and clips lined up neatly.

4. Testing, certification and handover

The circuit is tested, the charger commissioned, and the paperwork issued. We then set up the app with you and show you how scheduled charging works before we leave.

There is no single national price, because no two properties are the same. The things that genuinely move the cost are:

• the charger model you choose
• the distance from your consumer unit to the charger position
• the condition and spare capacity of your consumer unit
• the cable route — internal, external, through a garage or under a driveway
• any ground works or ducting needed to reach detached parking
• whether load management is required to work within your main fuse rating
• any additional electrical upgrades identified during the assessment

Conservation considerations, longer internal routes and thicker masonry are the main things that add time — and therefore cost — to a Lichfield installation.
