Start with where the car parks
Charging ports are in different places on different cars — front wing, rear wing, nose. Where you habitually park, and which way round, determines how much cable you need and where the unit should go.
If two drivers park in different positions, or you sometimes park nose-in and sometimes reverse, plan for the least convenient case rather than the ideal one.
Practical considerations
Cable reach
Tethered cables are typically five to seven and a half metres. Measure the real route the cable takes, not the straight line.
Weather exposure
Home chargers are designed for outdoor use, but a position sheltered from driving rain and direct low sun keeps the unit and connector in better condition.
Height and access
Around chest height is usually comfortable, clear of splashing and easy to reach without stooping.
Distance from the consumer unit
Shorter runs cost less and look neater. Sometimes moving the charger a metre saves a considerable amount of cable and containment.
Appearance
On a prominent frontage, a side elevation or garage wall is often tidier while still working perfectly well.
Obstructions and safety
Avoid positions where a cable would cross a walkway, a gate swing, or the route people take to the front door.
Inside a garage or outside?
- Inside a garage: protected from weather, discreet, but only useful if the car actually goes in
- Outside on the house wall: most flexible for everyday parking
- On a detached garage: neat, but may need a new or upgraded supply
