How it works
When your panels generate more electricity than the house is using, the surplus normally goes back to the grid. A solar-compatible EV charger can instead divert that surplus into the car, so you use energy you have already generated rather than exporting it cheaply and buying it back later at a higher rate.
Chargers with solar modes monitor what your home is importing and exporting and adjust the charging current accordingly. Some can blend a little grid power to keep charging steady when generation dips.
The practical limits
- Charging is limited by how much surplus you actually generate at that moment
- British weather means output varies enormously through the year
- The car has to be plugged in during daylight — awkward if it is at work all day
- There is a minimum current below which charging cannot continue
In midsummer, a decent array can put a useful amount of range into a car during the day. In midwinter, solar charging will contribute very little and you will be relying on the grid.

Where a home battery fits
A battery stores surplus generation for later, which helps if the car is away during the day. It also lets you charge the car from stored energy in the evening. Whether that stacks up financially depends on your tariff, your generation and how you use the car.
Solar and tariffs are not either/or
Many households use solar surplus when it is available and a cheap overnight tariff the rest of the time. A good smart charger handles both.
Choosing the right charger
If you have panels, or plan to install them, look at chargers with genuine solar surplus modes — the Zappi is the best known example. Additional monitoring equipment is usually needed near the meter, so factor that into the installation discussion.
