What is BG SyncEV?

BG SyncEV is the electric vehicle charging range from BG Electrical, a long-established British electrical accessories manufacturer. The domestic units are single-phase 7.4kW wall chargers using the standard Type 2 connection, so they work with every plug-in car and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK.

They come in tethered form, with the charging lead permanently attached, and untethered form, where you plug your own cable into a socket on the unit. Both do the same job — the choice is about convenience versus a tidier wall.

Why we fit them so often

  • Simple, uncluttered to live with — plug in and it charges
  • Smart functionality and app control for scheduling and monitoring
  • Compact unit that sits neatly on a house wall or garage
  • Supported by a manufacturer with a long track record in UK electrical products
  • Parts and support available through the trade channels we already use

We are not going to tell you it is the best charger in the country — nobody can honestly make that claim. What we can say is that it is a charger we regularly recommend, it behaves itself in service, and when something does need looking at, support is straightforward.

Who it suits

BG SyncEV is a good fit if you park off-street at home, want a reliable overnight charge without fiddling, and prefer a neat, unobtrusive unit. It suits full electric cars and plug-in hybrids equally — a 7.4kW single-phase charger is the right size for the overwhelming majority of UK homes.

When we might suggest Ohme instead

If you are on a smart overnight electricity tariff and want charging automatically steered into the cheapest half-hour slots, Ohme's tariff integration is very strong and we regularly recommend it for that reason.

There is more detail on that unit in our guide to Ohme home chargers.

The honest answer

Ask us whether BG SyncEV or Ohme is better suited to your vehicle and property. We fit both, so we have no reason to steer you wrongly.

What the installation involves

  • A dedicated circuit run from your consumer unit to the charger position
  • Protective devices and earthing arrangements to meet the current wiring regulations
  • A cable route agreed with you first — surface, internal or through masonry
  • Mounting the unit at a sensible height for the car's charge port
  • Full testing, certification and a hand-over on the app
  • Notification to the distribution network operator where it is required

A straightforward single-phase domestic job is usually around half a day. What adds time is distance from the consumer unit, an older board with no spare capacity, or a route that has to go through the house rather than around it.

Thinking about a BG SyncEV?

Tell us your car, your postcode and where you park. We will confirm whether it is the right unit for you and give you a proper price.

Why we recommend BG SyncEV for many home installations

It is one of the chargers our electrician regularly recommends, for reasons that are practical rather than promotional: it is built by an established British electrical manufacturer, it is simple to operate, and in service it behaves itself.

We can advise whether BG SyncEV is the right fit for your vehicle, property and charging habits — and if it is not, we will say so. We fit other units too.

Smart charging and load management

Smart functionality

The smart units connect to your home Wi-Fi and are controlled through an app, so you can set a charging schedule, see how much energy a session used and check the charger's status without going outside. We set this up and hand it over working.

If you want charging to follow a smart energy tariff automatically as prices change, that is where Ohme has the edge — worth reading the comparison before deciding.

Load management

Some houses have a main fuse with limited headroom once a shower, oven and charger are all running. Load management lets the charger reduce its draw at those moments and pick up again afterwards, rather than the whole house tripping. We configure it during the installation where your supply calls for it.

Can it be installed before my car arrives?

Yes, and it is the sensible way round. We do not need the vehicle present to install, test and certify the charger, so booking while you are waiting on delivery means it is ready on day one instead of a fortnight later.

If you are still choosing between cars, ring us anyway. The installation is the same either way and the survey does not expire.

What we need before quoting

A quote is quicker and far more accurate if you can tell us:

  • your postcode and where you park — driveway, garage, shared access
  • roughly where the consumer unit is in relation to that parking spot
  • the make and model of the car, or the one you have on order
  • whether you want a tethered lead or an untethered socket
  • a photo of the consumer unit and the meter position if you can manage it

That is usually enough for a realistic figure over the phone, confirmed properly at the survey.

Frequently asked questions

Will a BG SyncEV work with my car?

If your car charges through a Type 2 socket — which every plug-in car and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK does — then yes.

Tethered or untethered?

Tethered is quicker day to day because the lead is always there. Untethered looks tidier and is more flexible if you change vehicle or need a longer cable. Both are available.

Is 7.4kW fast enough at home?

For nearly everyone, yes. It is the maximum a standard single-phase UK domestic supply can sensibly deliver to a charger, and it charges most cars fully overnight.

Can I control it from my phone?

The smart units offer app control for scheduling and monitoring. We set this up and walk you through it before we leave.

Are you a BG SyncEV installer near me?

If you are in east Birmingham, north Solihull or the villages just beyond — Shard End, Castle Bromwich, Chelmsley Wood, Marston Green, Sheldon, Yardley, Water Orton, Coleshill and the surrounding areas — then yes. Ring us with your postcode if you are not sure.

Is BG SyncEV better than Ohme?

Neither is objectively better. SyncEV is our preferred option for many straightforward installations; Ohme suits customers who want charging tied closely to a smart energy tariff. We install both and will advise based on your situation.

Do you supply the charger or should I buy it?

We can supply and install it as one job, which keeps the warranty and the workmanship with one contractor. If you have already bought a unit, talk to us and we will tell you honestly whether we are happy to fit it.
