Heating & Electrical Controls

Heating systems are only as good as the controls telling them what to do. We handle the electrical side: the wiring, the switching and the faults that stop it working.

Electrical work, not gas work

It is worth being clear about the split. We carry out the electrical side of heating systems — control wiring, thermostats, programmers, timers, wiring centres, zone valve wiring and the circuits feeding them.

Work on gas appliances themselves, including boilers, must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We are happy to work alongside your heating engineer so the controls and the appliance are handled by the right trade.

Thermostats and programmers

Replacing an old mechanical thermostat or a dial programmer with a modern digital or smart control usually improves comfort and reduces waste, simply because the heating runs when you actually need it.

Some smart controls are straightforward swaps; others need an additional conductor or a separate supply at the boiler. We check the existing wiring first so you are not left with a control that cannot be fitted.

Timers, zoning and wiring centres

Where a house is heated as a single zone, upstairs is often too warm while the room you are sitting in is not warm enough. Zoning splits the system so areas can be controlled separately.

The electrical side of that involves wiring centres, zone valve connections and programmer channels, all of which need to be wired correctly and labelled so future work is straightforward.

Electric heating controls

Not every home is on gas. Electric panel heaters, storage heaters, underfloor heating and immersion heaters all rely on properly rated circuits, isolators and controls.

We install and replace these, including thermostats for underfloor heating and timeswitches for immersion heaters and storage heating.

Fault finding on heating controls

Heating that will not come on, comes on at the wrong time, or will not turn off is very often a control or wiring problem rather than a boiler problem — a failed thermostat, a stuck zone valve microswitch, a miswired programmer or a tripping supply.

We test the control wiring, identify where the signal is being lost and put it right, or confirm the fault sits with the appliance so you can call the right engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Can an electrician fit a smart thermostat?
Yes. Fitting and wiring the control is electrical work. Whether a particular model can replace your existing control depends on the wiring at the boiler and programmer, which we check first.
Are you Gas Safe registered?
No. We carry out the electrical side of heating systems only. Work on gas appliances must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we are happy to work alongside one.
My heating comes on at the wrong times — is that electrical?
Frequently, yes. Faulty programmers, failed thermostats and wiring centre problems are common causes and can all be tested.
Can you wire underfloor heating controls?
Yes. We install supplies, isolation and thermostats for electric underfloor heating, and control wiring for wet systems installed by a heating engineer.
