The short version
| JAECOO model | Powertrain | Home charging |
|---|---|---|
| JAECOO 7 SHS-P | Plug-in hybrid — battery plus petrol engine | Yes — has a charging socket and is designed to be plugged in |
| JAECOO 7 (non plug-in versions) | Petrol or self-charging hybrid depending on trim | No — no external charging socket, so a home charge point would be of no use |
| JAECOO E5 | Battery electric — no petrol engine | Yes — charging it is the only way to refuel it |
Check your paperwork
Your order confirmation, V5C or handbook will state the exact version. If it says SHS-P you have the plug-in hybrid. If you are unsure, look for an external charging flap — a car without one cannot be charged from the mains.
JAECOO 7 SHS-P — the plug-in hybrid
The SHS-P is the version of the JAECOO 7 with a charging socket. It has a battery you top up from the mains plus a petrol engine, so short local journeys can be done on battery and longer trips fall back on petrol.
That makes a home charge point genuinely worthwhile. The economics of a plug-in hybrid only work if the battery starts each day full — otherwise you are carrying the hybrid hardware around and paying for petrol to move it.

JAECOO 7 SHS-H and the petrol versions — no charging required
The non plug-in versions of the JAECOO 7 do not have an external charging connection. A self-charging hybrid manages its own small battery using the engine and braking; a petrol version has no traction battery to charge at all.
If that is what you have, you do not need a home charge point and nobody should be selling you one. It is a distinction worth being clear about, because the model names look similar on a forecourt board.
JAECOO E5 — fully electric
The E5 is a battery electric car. There is no petrol engine, so charging is not optional — it is how the car is refuelled. For anyone doing daily mileage, home charging on an overnight rate is by far the cheapest way to run it.

If your JAECOO does plug in, what should you fit?
A standard 7kW home charge point, on its own protected circuit, using the Type 2 connector that every plug-in car sold in the UK uses for AC charging. There is no JAECOO-specific charger and you do not need one.
For most straightforward home installations, BG SyncEV is the charger our electrician tends to recommend. Where smart tariff scheduling is the priority, we also install Ohme and will advise which suits your household.

Frequently asked questions
Does every JAECOO 7 need a home charger?
No. Only the SHS-P plug-in hybrid has an external charging socket. The self-charging hybrid and petrol versions cannot be charged from the mains and do not need a charge point.
How do I tell whether my JAECOO plugs in?
Check your order paperwork or V5C for the exact version, or look for an external charging flap on the bodywork. No flap means no external charging.
Is there a special charger for JAECOO cars?
No. Any standard UK home charge point with a Type 2 connection will work with a plug-in JAECOO. The choice is about features and installation, not brand compatibility.
