Emergency Electrical Repairs: What to Do Before We Arrive

Electrical emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Whether it's a tripping consumer unit, a burning smell from a socket or a total loss of power, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can prevent damage, injury and downtime.

The first rule is isolation. If it is safe to do so, switch off the main isolator at your consumer unit (fuse board). This cuts power to the whole property and removes the immediate risk of electric shock or fire. Never touch anything that is wet, smoking or visibly damaged.

If a specific circuit has tripped, unplug any appliances on that circuit before resetting the breaker. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call a qualified electrician — repeated tripping usually indicates a fault that needs testing, not resetting.

For burning smells, discolouration around sockets or sparks, isolate the supply and ventilate the area. Do not attempt to remove socket faceplates or investigate wiring yourself. Take photographs if safe to do so — this helps us diagnose the fault faster on arrival.
